2018 Pantone Color of the Year
Everyone get ready to have some phenomenal ideas, because the 2018 Pantone Color of the Year is Ultra Violet!
I love when knitting inspiration finds me. Anything that can give me a fresh or interesting way to approach my projects is always welcome.
When Pantone released their 2018 color of the year I realized that I can’t remember the last thing I knitted in violet.  It’s such a beautiful color and their choice really made me wonder why I hadn’t used it!
I saw this as a fantastic opportunity to explore for myself new patterns and yarns in this captivating color, and decided to share my findings with you.
Some of my favorite yarns already feature this striking shade. Luminance Lace Yarn makes a fabulous version in color “Brilliance”, Stroll Hand Painted Yarn features vivid magenta and icy blue highlights that tango between tones of violet in “Gemstone”, and the Wool of the Andes Sport line features the (always stunning) Amethyst Heather.
Having the yarn is only half the fun, though. If you’re like me you might be thinking, “Why, yes, these yarns are wonderful, dazzling, neat, and I love them, but what projects should I use them on?”
I have a very exciting answer for you: I’ve brought suggestions!
Arisaig
This warm and comfy wrap features beautiful cables which highlight the array of deep purples and reddish pinks in Wool of the Andes Sport’s Amethyst Heather. And, if being gorgeous isn’t enough, this 100% Peruvian Highland Wool wrap will keep you toasty even in the crisp breeze of a cold coastal beach! Definitely an exciting knit.
  Meandering Socks
These socks are made with slipped stitches that help to bring the short color repeats of this Stroll Hand Painted Yarn in color “Gemstone” out into beautiful stripe patterns.  The cuteness of these socks is matched only by their softness, and with 75% Superwash Merino Wool and 25% Nylon they’re also extremely washable (something you may value in socks)!
Kinross Avenue WrapI am in love with this wrap!  Featuring a stockinette body this piece uses a main base of stockinette stitches accented with small amounts of lacework and beading to create a modern and classy style that really showcases this vivacious violet.  The shimmer and drape of Luminance Lace Yarn in the color “Brilliance” is perfect for making a luxurious wrap you can wear when you find yourself in need of a dramatic burst of color.
I know I’m excited by these ideas and I can’t wait to try crafting some regal new duds now. If you’re feeling the same I cordially invite you to immediately head over to our website and check my new favorite color: Violet!

Today's tea: Arueshalae's blend from @starlightcleric's Wrath of the Righteous teas. The lavender and mint make this a really soothing tea!
Today's knit: I doubt you can see much difference on the Kinross Avenue Wrap from yesterday's pictures; it's pretty repetitive at this point. So instead, I pinned out a bit of it so you can see the faux-cable (done just with increases and decreases, no crossed stitches) and bead diamonds on the border. What's harder to see in photos is the lovely sheen of silk in this yarn! That silk fiber may be frustrating to untangle but it sure does knit up pretty.

Finished: Kinross Avenue Wrap from the Luxurious Lace book, knit with Knit Picks Luminance Lace in the Kind colorway (which looks to be discontinued, alas, but there are some other pretty pink and purple ones in the current selection) and I think these are the beads I used, a very pretty metallic rainbow of blacks and greys and coppery golds.
Laceweight silk is so gauzy and ethereal after blocking! It was a bit of a hassle to knit with as the yarn ball had a tendency to fall into tangles way too often, and clingy silk turns out to be rather harder to untangle than elastic wool. :-( Worth it in the end though! Aside from silk issues, this pattern would be a great one to start with for anyone wanting to learn to knit lace *or* to knit with beads; as you can see, there are long stockinette sections in each row and minimal lace & beads with an easy to follow chart. Although it does have lace work on both the right side and wrong side, which can be a little trickier. So maybe not a first lace project, but it could easily be a first beading project! :-D

Today's tea: Anxi Wulong Low Fire, a nice, mild green oolong from Adagio's Masters Tea branch.
Today's knit: Now that the socks are done I've resumed work on the Kinross Avenue Wrap. It's now several repeats longer than the last time I took a pic, although I'm not sure you can tell in its amorphous pre-blocking state...I have also counted out the beads I need for the repeats in the decrease section at the end to make sure I don't keep going in the center section for too long and use them all up, and that end is getting pretty close!

Today's tea: Daeran's blend from @starlightcleric's Wrath of the Righteous set! It has Caramel, Cream & Currant with raspberry pieces & rose petals.
Today's knit: I've finally resurrected the Kinross Avenue Wrap, a long-hibernating project that I set aside last summer when I got frustrated with the silk laceweight yarn tangling pretty horrifically when I was pulling it from the center of the yarn cake. I finally had to break off the yarn and rejoin it from the outside of the ball and at that point I was too angry at the yarn to knit it anymore last summer, so the project has been just sitting in my living room the whole school year. XD Happy to report that pulling from the outside of the ball, which is now neatly tucked into the little tin you see in the picture on the right, is working fine and it hasn't tangled anymore since I picked it back up. When I get to the second skein of this yarn I'm probably going to have to wind the ball by hand instead of using my yarn-cake-winder like I did for the first one; it is, like the namesake of today's tea, both a decadent delight and a frustration. :-D (And speaking of tea frustration: when I first ordered Daeran's blend, it was somehow mixed up with Ember's, which includes lapsang souchong, which is delightfully smoky but does not go well at all with the rest of Daeran's blend. I don't know if his sample absorbed the aroma from being packed next to Ember's in shipping or if it actually got mis-mixed, but the smoky part of the blend never did clear up so I ended up ordering another sample of it - and this one is perfection. Honestly, the whole sequence of events seems very appropriate for a Daeran tea... XD Happily, the second sample really is as delightful as Daeran's romance ends up turning out!)

Rustic Little Heart by Heidi Kirrmaier (knitting a few of these for a school thing but this is the only one I got a picture of before I handed it off...)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Water Lily by Sybil R is the cutest dishcloth I've ever made. I had to fiddle with the instructions after making the first one (in lighter colors) and ending up with gaps at the tips of the petals, but the second one (in darker colors) turned out delightfully and I gave it to my uncle when he hosted us for Christmas. :-D
And last but not least is the current WIP...but Tumblr tells me I've just hit the limit for pictures in one post XD So I guess it's for the best that my Aeria by Linnea Ornstein is not yet a FO? I'll post it separately, it's too gorgeous to wait for it to be finished!

I think I've decided what to cast on next now that the Kinross Avenue Wrap is all done. Gauges have been swatched! (but not, um, quite met...nevertheless I think I've determined what size I need to knit) I have cast on many stitches and knitted quite a few rows while catching up on yesterday's CritRole, so further updates in the morning. :-D

Today’s tea: Moringa. It’s one of their Wellness blends, and I don’t know much about what its purported benefits are but I did some googling to make sure it’s safe to drink with diabetes, and it appears it might lower blood sugar some, so I’ll be keeping an eye on my cgm to make sure it does not overdo that...As for the taste, if you’re one of those people who thinks green tea tastes like grass, do not drink this one, it is very high on the “vegetal taste” scale. XD A bit nutty, too. Not terrible but I wouldn’t seek it out intentionally.
Today’s knit: Backlit lace! The bead diamonds now number 13. And the times I’ve had to cut the yarn to detangle the ball (even though I’m now pulling from the outside strand! Somehow the rat’s tail of the inside strand snuck out and tangled itself with the outside part this time! Ugh...) and then rejoin the yarn now number two, so the shawl may be in time out for the rest of the day at least. Back to sock knitting for me!

Today’s tea: Black Cherry, a deliciously strong black tea blend!
Today’s knit: Count the bead diamonds! We’re up to 12 repeats now. So, just...18...more to go before decreases...Still working on it a bit each day but it’s nice to have the sock project to swap in for some variety now too.
Pattern: Kinross Avenue Wrap

Today’s tea: Mordin, a Mass Effect fandom blend. My opinion of it pretty much matches the description on the blend: “Kiiiiinda, weird but, like. Really good?? Needs more tests and observation. Results inconclusive.“ :-D It’s a blend of  White Tropics, White Eternal Spring & Watermelon Cooler and the combo of watermelon with tropical (pineapple/coconut) flavors is interesting and...overall, not unpleasant. In fact I think the watermelon has improved and enhanced the tropical flavors.
Today’s knit: I put the stole on blocking wires so you can see  the shape of it a little better. It just keeps going in the established pattern w/o increases for...a long while, this is basically a scarf I’m making. You can track progress by the number of bead diamonds, which is now at 10 and which will hit 30 before I start decreasing on the far end of it to match the increases at the beginning, so we should end up with a total of 36 bead diamonds by the end. Which means this is a little over a quarter done.
Pattern: Kinross Avenue Wrap
Yarn: Knit Picks Luminance Lace in Kind (by the way, putting this lace weight mulberry silk in a center-pull ball was a mistake. I gave up on trying to untangel the knots that were emerging from its center (there was a lot of static electricity generating while I was winding that on my ball winder, which is probably why it’s knotting), cut the thread and started again from the outside of the ball as if just joining a new skein of yarn. So for future reference, note to self: no center-pull silk laceweight balls...)

Today’s tea: Melonberry Green. Very refreshing - watermelon and strawberry on a green tea base, what’s not to love? :-D
Today’s knit: We’re going from super fluffy bulky one-day knits to tiny lace weight silk yarn shawl. It’s going quickly thus far but the rows do get slower the more increases go into that big stockinette section! I’m on the last set of said increases, and then it will just continue in pattern with the stockinette section and the lace & beads on the right for a while, and then decrease back down to a symmetrical point on the other end to make a nice long stole. The yarn is Knit Picks Luminance Lace in the Kind colorway, very lavender-pink, and it makes a lovely lightweight fabric that will be nice for a spring/fall scarf, and the pattern is Kinross Avenue Wrap.

Today’s tea: White Tropics of Cancer, one of a series of Banned Books Blends. It is...white tea with tropical flavors, basically. :-D Coconut, pineapple. There are several other flavors in there too but I’m just tasting the basic Tropical Duo.
Today’s knit: Increases are finished, now I’m knitting the central part of the stole, not that you can tell when it’s not stretched out for blocking, but you can get a basic idea of the layout of the design here. You can also track my progress by how many repeats of the beaded diamonds you see on the edge.

Today’s tea: BeerButter, a HP blend with  Caramel, Cream & Vanilla. Very nice!
Today’s knit: Still letting the Kinross Avenue Wrap sit for a while so I started a new project, which happens to be CritRole-inspired! :-D This is the Vex Hearts Percy Cowl, a lovely tribute to the best of ships, in a blend of alpaca, cotton, and modal that should be warm and very wearable. If you also find Perc’ahlia to be the best of ships, you should take a look at the pattern description on Ravelry to see how this design incorporates their themes!
